Abstract

The article presents model studies of the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine based on own concept of a regulated reactive muffler. A structure with a regulated input in the expansion chamber was proposed and the influence of adjustment degrees on the effectiveness of acoustic energy attenuation was determined in the simulation research process. In the modeling process of the mentioned structure, the basic acoustic properties of the system were mapped and the calculation process was carried out for selected real exploiting conditions of the internal combustion engine. For the mapping of real non-linear phenomena during exhaust gases flow, the boundary element method and volumetric flows were used as well as the specialized calculation package CFD (Computer Fluid Dynamics)-AVL AST. Comparisons of the test results of various degrees of regulation allowed determining the suitability of the proposed solution and evaluating the benefits in shaping the acoustic energy by determining the transmission loss.
