Abstract
Esophagectomy for achalasia is reserved for patients with refractory disease, unmitigated by prior treatment. Esophagectomy can be performed through a variety of techniques, but three-field or transthoracic methods are the most commonly used. Conduit options include stomach, colon, and small intestine. Outcomes for esophagectomy for achalasia are good when performed in specialized surgical centers by experienced surgeons.
