Abstract
This chapter analyzes the relationship between the monkeys and the Qom (previously known as Toba) peoples of the Argentine Gran Chaco. The aim of this work is to ask: Are howler monkeys in eastern Formosa Province perceived as the same to both indigenous and nonindigenous people? To answer this question, we will first examine how the Qom mythology associates monkeys to humans. The end will be to track the origin of humanity, animality, and their convergences. Then, we will analyze current scenarios which reflect the relationships between human and non-human primates in order to understand those patterns in the context of the indigenous sociocosmology. Guided by the method known as “controlled equivocation,” we will conclude by contrasting multiple ways of constructing worlds that relates monkeys and humans.
