Abstract
Spine pain specialists realize they must be aware of and address psychologic and psychiatric dimensions of their patients despite limited training in this realm. They are also aware that the condition they are treating influences and is influenced by the patient’s behavior. This chapter strives to guide these specialists toward a realistic approach to understanding and dealing with the interface of the mind-body dynamic. Clarification of neurobehavioral dualities including mind/body and endogenous versus exogenous interactions will be addressed, and there is an introduction to self-awareness as a critical component for effective empathy. Finally, some generalizable subjects will be discussed to bring these concepts together clinically.
