Abstract
The demarcation between personality disorders, neurosis, psychosis, and above all normality is difficult and controversial. Common to all personality disorders are disorders of emotional experience, perception of reality, self-perception and self-portrayal, impulse and self-control, and ego-syntony. They affect all areas of thinking, experiencing, behavior, and relationships with oneself and others. Since patients with personality disorders rarely seek out a psychotherapist directly, doctors have an important function and responsibility in motivating people to undergo appropriate treatment and receive long-term support.
