  • First Online:

Abstract

Main symptoms of addiction are loss of control, withdrawal symptoms and development of tolerance. To motivate patients for treatment, an open and informative discussion is necessary. In motivational interviewing the therapist accepts the ambivalence of the patient, promotes the perception of discrepancies and willingness to change and accepts the resistance of the patient to handle his/her inner conflicts.
