Abstract

The need to teach the languages spoken in a war zone has long been felt by the Australian Defence Forces, and thus the Defence Force School of Languages (DFSL) was established after the Second World War. The intensive language courses in DFSL are used to facilitate teaching of such languages to deploying service personnel. DFSL is located in Melbourne where hundreds of Defence members study a second language in a variety of intensive courses. The effectiveness of these intensive courses in learning second languages has been tried and proven for many years in the DFSL. This chapter provides a case study of current military practice with respect to language training for preparing those who will be deployed into a conflict zone.
