Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy: Technique and Outcomes

Abstract

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is not only an accepted stand-alone procedure for morbid obesity, but it has become the most frequently practiced bariatric operation in the world. Its technique is becoming more standardized and adjusted to evidence. The surgical technique practiced by the authors is described and explained.

LSG has demonstrated to be a surgical technique that compares well with gastric bypass, considered the gold standard in bariatric surgery. LSG is not only a restrictive procedure with results obtained by the mere reduction of stomach size. It produces a significant weight loss that can be maintained over time, with adequate control of comorbidities and a low rate of complications and deaths. It is, in the view of authors, the first option of treatment in what should be considered a chronic and incurable disease that, like other similar conditions, should be treated with therapies of progressive complexity.
