Pastoral Care Teaching: A Case Story Vignette

Abstract

This case story vignette is the penultimate chapter of our volume. The chapter provides the perspective and voice of a South Asian practitioner. We situate this case story vignette at the end of the volume to personalize the participatory nature of teacher education. We will integrate the themes from this vignette into the volume’s Conclusion chapter. The case story argues for effective and affective teaching through the metaphor of pastoral care. The case story author, Ashwathi Muraleedharan, describes how her training and work as a professional social worker with expertise in special education proved to be a powerful tool in the school she taught in. She also explains her plan of action for honing an effective and affective teaching practice which also included the development of a differentiated curriculum in Hindi. Ashwathi’s case story illustrates how teaching and learning reflects the day-to-day interactions between students and their teachers.
