Abstract

Machine speed was the key element in the first and second industrial revolutions, ushering in the greatest material civilization known to mankind. Known by many names, including motion, acceleration, and movement, it increased output per unit of tools and supervision, leading to unprecedented levels and rates of growth of wealth.
