Abstract

The percentage of the elderly population over the world is expected to increase by 2050 [1–3]. With such progressive changes in the elderly population profile and aging, intensive care becomes in high demand to treat elderly patients with an increased number of comorbidities and daily life limitations [1]. By the year 2020, it is estimated that 48% of the elderly population will have more than one chronic disease and some type of associated comorbidity [2]. The comorbidities are increased mainly in people older than 65. It has been recently recommended that the elderly population should be included in the clinical practice guidelines to receive a patient-centric approach [4]. Aging or being old should not be considered a criterion for this population group being refused any acute care, including any type of mechanical ventilation.
