Abstract
A 28-year-old woman, G1P0, and in labor at term, ruptures her amniotic membranes while the fetal head is still floating high up and well out of the pelvis. Amniotic fluid gushes out of her vagina and something else comes out as well—the umbilical cord! (L-1) The nurse dons sterile gloves and puts her right hand into the patient’s vagina to feel for the fetal head. She feels the umbilical cord pulsating against her right wrist as her finger tips touch the baby’s head and she pushes the head gently upward to keep it from coming any lower and compressing the cord against the pelvis (L-2). She calls for help in a loud voice since she cannot reach the Code Blue button from her current position.
