Abstract
Social relationships play a critical role in helping to maintain health and well-being across the life course. Social isolation has severe consequences for individuals, families, and communities. With the growing recognition of the need to identify opportunities to prevent and reduce social isolation, the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare has called for social workers to lead the charge to eradicate social isolation. Gerontological social workers, focusing on the person-in-environment, can play a critical role in furthering our knowledge and development of innovative interventions to tackle this important issue.
