Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with a wide variation of type and severity of symptoms that usually appear in the early years of life. Comorbid psychiatric illnesses are frequently associated with ASD, and among those, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is highly prevalent in both childhood and adulthood. The similar behavioural profiles of ASD and OCD present the potential for confusion regarding diagnoses and intervention efforts, underling the need to carry out a careful diagnostic process. Moreover, considering the paucity of data regarding treatment strategies of these subjects, pharmacological and psychological interventions require a close clinical monitoring and a more personalised approach.
