Abstract

Difficulties in explaining European integration do often derive from the “contentious” relationship between economic and political theories of integration. However, both fields should not be seen separated, but should be integrated into an overall theoretical framework in order to explain European integration. European republicanism and the res publica of public goods could deliver this framework. This approach would also provide a new narrative for European identity.
