Notes

  1. 1.

The 88th Army Corps (LXXXVIII A.K.) was stationed throughout the Netherlands, with the exception of parts of Zeeland, i.e., Noord Beveland, Zuid Beveland, Walcheren, and Zeeuws Vlaanderen, and comprised about six divisions with a total of 40,000 men.

  2. 2.

Hepatitis A is caused by the hepatitis A virus. This is a less severe form of hepatitis, which occurs mainly in children. The symptoms come after an incubation period of two to six weeks and are generally fatigue, mild fever, sometimes pain in the upper abdomen, and nausea. In adults, hepatitis A usually accompanies jaundice, which is a yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. There is no possible treatment with medication. The disease must be left to take its course, and in most cases lasts no longer than 6 weeks.

  3. 3.

At that time, the Green Cross (Groene Kruis) was an association that was actively involved in nursing the sick and improving hygiene conditions.

  4. 4.

In wartime, the BBC started their broadcast with the first four notes (GGGE) of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony in C minor, opus 67. These four notes were very important for the occupied countries, because that was the sound of the free world.

  5. 5.

Willy Paul Franz Lages (October 5, 1901–April 2, 1971) was the German chief of the Sicherheitsdienst in Amsterdam during the Second World War. From March 1941 he led the so-called Zentralstelle für jüdische Auswanderung (Central Bureau for the Jewish Emigration). As such he was responsible for the deportation of Dutch Jews to the concentration camps in Germany and occupied Poland. en.wikipedia.org.
