Abstract

This chapter tracks the political developments that made the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon possible in 2005. It then attributes the institutional transformation of the FPM to a conscious decision taken by Michel Aoun. However, it blames the FPM’s adoption of some sectarian strategies on fierce electoral competition with other political parties in predominantly Christian electoral constituencies; here, the sectarian makeup of FPM membership, discussed in Chapter 4, starts to reflect on its discourse and strategies in national politics. The chapter finds that transparent party elections, adequate organizational structures and mechanisms should be established to deal with the issues arising between new and veteran activists. It analyzes the narratives of party transformation, while making some policy recommendations for the resolution of internal party conflict.
