Abstract
The terms “sense” and “meaning” are often used interchangeably by authors with potentially confusing results. This chapter offers a clear differentiation between the two terms. In so doing, the relationship of sensemaking to meaningmaking is demonstrated and the products of both processes differentiated. The chapter begins with a review of the principles of sensemaking including the use of stories and pragmatic prospection. The ideas about the importance of narratives in Weick, Sortor, and Valsiner are explored and discussed.
