Abstract
Calciphylaxis is a rare and devastating condition that typically affects patients with chronic renal failure on dialysis. Painful skin lesions are often the hallmark of the disorder, although it can systemically affect any organ system including muscle. Skeletal muscle involvement from calciphylaxis often causes a painful myopathy due to muscle ischemia. A high index of clinical suspicion is needed to make an early and accurate diagnosis. Although skin biopsy is often diagnostic, advanced tissue necrosis may mask the underlying pathology. Muscle biopsy can be useful in such cases where myopathy is a clinical feature.
