Abstract

Climate change is a global issue, and given their intrinsic vulnerabilities, small island developing states (SIDS) are particularly susceptible to the impact of climate change. The Caribbean Region is particularly susceptible to the impact of natural disasters due to its geographic features and location. The region has experienced the highest levels of damage globally as measured by impact on GDP. Children living in poverty and in flood-prone areas are particularly vulnerable. After the occurrence of a natural disaster, it is difficult for children in SIDS to recover and their childhood is disrupted. Schools are closed, children sometimes experience food shortage and, even worse, may be sexually abused in shelters. This chapter examines the impact of natural disasters on the four selected countries and assesses the damage especially to the quality of life of children in these territories.
