Abstract

Focusing on the Egyptian protests, this chapter aims to analyse the logic of action in the Egyptian protests, the role of the leaders and their use of ICTs in the organisation of digitally supported protests. The interviews, conducted with the administrators of the Kullena Khaled Said page (the We are all Khaled Said page) and experienced activists on the ground, shed light on the organisation of networked movements. Analysis of these accounts shows that there are three sorts of communicators in the Egyptian protests. These communicators are influential figures on different platforms: hybrid leaders who are both communicators and influential figures on the ground and in the digital sphere, soft leaders who communicate and lead the protest co-ordination online and experienced leaders on the ground.
