Abstract

Although limited research has been conducted on the subject of crisis leadership, increased interest and need exists to understand how leaders and organizations respond to a crisis (Hutchins & Wang, Advances in Developing Human Resources, 10(3), 310–330, 2008; Johnson, Crisis Leadership: How to Lead in Times of Crisis, Threat and Uncertainty. New York: Bloomsbury, 2018). This investigation of 1 Samuel 17 employed a narrative exegetical analysis to examine David’s response to a crisis provoked by Goliath’s challenge to engage in a battle. The analysis of David’s competencies during pre-crisis, crisis, and post-crisis phases informs the field of crisis leadership by emphasizing that sensemaking competency is critical to all three stages of crisis.
