Abstract

This chapter reviews what has been learnt about how pathways from smaller size at birth through rapid infancy weight gain lead to future disease risk. The association between low birth weight and increased risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D), in particular, is often only evident after allowing for larger current body size, implying a dependence on the transition from smaller size at birth to overweight or obesity in adulthood. The link between T2D risk and the transition from smaller size at birth to larger childhood size has been attributed to the development of insulin resistance.
