Abstract
Neck swellings occurring in children can be usefully divided into those occurring in the midline of the neck, discussed in this chapter, and those situated laterally. While it is uncommon for neck masses to represent sinister pathology, it is important that these lesions are accurately diagnosed and treated by those with appropriate expertise, as the treatment of those children receiving initial inappropriate treatment can be very challenging. The differential diagnosis of a midline neck mass in a child includes a thyroglossal duct cyst, midline dermoid cyst, lymph node, lipoma, hemangioma and ranula.
