Abstract

The past few decades have witnessed a revolution in the knowledge gained on cardiovascular disease treatment and prevention, providing us with one of the best evidence-bases in medicine. This chapter provides the reader with the basis for understanding the mechanisms of action, clinical uses and toxicity of the drugs used in the prevention and therapy of cardiovascular diseases. There is also some coverage of the adverse cardiovascular effects of drugs used for the treatment of diseases in other organ systems. The understanding of these drugs will assist the pathologists in their interpretation of clinical cases and to provide more insightful clinical advice based on knowledge of drug action.
