Circumcision

Abstract

This chapter describes the surgical procedure for circumcision as performed by the following approach: Sleeve technique. The text includes an introduction that outlines the indications, risks, alternatives, essential steps, equipment, and variations in technique for the procedure. This is followed by an operative dictation, which provides the reader with an operative report, such as is found in a patient chart or electronic medical record. A description is provided of the following critical concepts for this procedure:

• 1. Retract foreskin, place a glans holding suture.

• 2. Mark and incise distal (inner) circumferential line of incision.

• 3. Partially deglove the penis.

• 4. Pull foreskin over the glans and with penis on stretch, mark proximal (outer) line of skin incision just distal to the imprint made by the free edge of the glans collar.

• 5. Incise the proximal (outer) circumferential incision and remove the intervening foreskin.

• 6. Achieve hemostasis with electrocautery, reapproximate skin edges, apply dressing, and remove holding suture.
