Abstract
This chapter describes the surgical treatment of necrotizing enterocolitis. This includes an introduction that outlines the indications, risks, alternatives, key steps, equipment needed, and variations in technique for the procedure. A template operative dictation is then included, providing a detailed operative report that is similar to what would be found in the patient medical record. A description is provided of the following critical concepts for this procedure: safe abdominal entry, removal of perforated and gangrenous bowel, techniques for preservation of bowel length, options for ostomy creation, and closure.
