The Role of the Interpreters in Intercultural Psychotherapy

Abstract

Due to migration and globalisation, the users of psychosocial and psychotherapeutic services are becoming more international and heterogeneous, as are the first languages of patients and users in mental health services. In consequence, besides bilingual professionals, interpreters are increasingly necessary in order to provide and deliver quality care for patients and users with limited proficiency in the language of the host countries.

Settings which include interpreters should be conceptualised as therapeutic triads, with the roles of the interpreters and therapists to be defined, including the task of the interpreter to serve not only as language but also as cultural interpreter. The chapter gives insights on chances and challenges in those settings and how to work with the complexities of the dynamics, misunderstandings/confusion, transference and countertransference in those three-person settings.
