Abstract
European health care systems have been challenged to adapt to the needs of an increasing number of immigrants, in particular refugees and asylum seekers. Shortcomings of the pre-existing systems have been unmasked due to the sheer number of new entries in many European countries. This has also started an ongoing debate about the need for more culturally competent mental health care provision and providers as well as raising the question as to whether specific intercultural psychotherapy is needed, and which barriers exist to effectively treat patients with another cultural background than the therapist’s.
