Usability of Nintendo Wii® and Wii Fit Plus® in the Elderly Population as a Resource for Psychomotor Intervention

Abstract

Psychomotricity seeks to maintain the cognitive and physical abilities of the elderly. This study aims to evaluate the usability of Wii Fit Plus® and Nintendo Wii® as a resource for psychomotricity professionals to promote balance in elderly. Participants were divided into four groups, one experimental and control with seniors (EGs and CGs) and one experimental and control with adults (EGa and CGa). The 9 mini-games of Wii Fit Plus®, MMSE, Usability, Satisfaction, Technology and Physical Activity questionnaires were used as instruments. Results and discussion: Both EGs showed a greater evolution in performance, usability and satisfaction assessment than CGs. The EGa had greater evolutions than the EGs in the performance of the mini-games and in the usability evaluation; The EGs presented greater evolutions in the creation of Mii and satisfaction. Wii Fit Plus® can be a more safe and playful way to use psychomotricity to promote balance in the elderly.
