Abstract

Ocular cytology is a highly specialized and challenging field to most general cytopathologists when encountered by the various types of ocular cytopathology specimens. The anatomy and conditions affecting the eye are unique, underscoring the enhanced need for clinicopathologic correlation and communication with the surgeon while processing and interpreting these samples. Furthermore, specimen sizes can be very small with limited options for a repeat biopsy, thus making allocation of limited samples to the appropriate ancillary tests very challenging.

The main scope of the chapter is to describe the pertinent differences in anatomy, processing of samples, ancillary tests including molecular studies, and differential diagnoses related to the most common ocular cytopathology samples.
