Contested Transparencies: An Introduction

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Contested Transparencies, Social Movements and the Public Sphere

Abstract

The chapter introduces the volume and its contributions. Focussing on the ambivalences of transparency concepts in different disciplines, the authors provide an overview of the treatment of transparency in the humanities and social sciences and trace the origins as well as the historical development of transparency ideas in the realm of the political. Further, the chapter motivates the study of transparency associated with social movements and the critique of ideology. From this perspective, as the authors argue, transparency demands are closely connected with power and class interests as well as with social conflicts based on it. Finally, the introduction justifies the selection of chapters and the trans-disciplinary approach within the volume.
