Abstract

Edge Computing (EC) emerges as an alternative to process the large volume of data generated by devices connected to the Internet, through the Internet of Things (IoT). This article is an introduction to EC and application scenarios such as: smart cities, Industry 4.0, Smart energy, healthcare, in which EC could allow the optimization of processes that normally run in cloud computing. This optimization consists in the pre-processing the data collected by devices before being sent to a central server, or to the cloud.
