Changing Understandings of School Leadership

Instructional Leadership and Leadership for Learning in Schools

Abstract

This chapter provides an outline as to why an interrogation of Instructional Leadership and Leadership for Learning is important. It starts with some examples of how education systems in different parts of the world, despite having the same underlying purpose, exhibit different ways of going about fulfilling this purpose. The chapter provides a brief overview of how the view of the role of the school leader has changed and identifies Instructional Leadership and Leadership for Learning as two currently used approaches in leading schools in different countries. It poses the question of whether or not Instructional Leadership and Leadership for Learning are two very different approaches to school leadership or whether they are simply different sides of the same coin. The chapter concludes with an overview of the rest of the book to explain the strategy behind the interrogation process to follow.
