Abstract

Morbid obesity is a cause of being homebound that poses distinct challenges in care. Morbid obesity exacerbates many of the chronic conditions faced by the homebound, including cardiopulmonary function. Immobility is a major challenge limiting access to outside care. Most durable medical equipment used in the home to improve mobility need to be sized appropriately in order to be effectively used (such as a bariatric bed) or to be used at all (such as a scale). Individuals with morbid obesity often have sleep disorders and associated respiratory compromise and require some type of respiratory assistance. Definitive management may include bariatric surgery.
