Decision Making in Vocal Fold Paralysis

Abstract

Arytenopexy, arytenoid adduction, and cricothyroid subluxation have long been considered procedures adjunctive to vocal fold medialization, to address unilateral vocal fold paralysis. Because these adjunctive procedures are performed less commonly, experience with these procedures is more limited; as a result, practice patterns can diverge more widely than in medialization laryngoplasty. This chapter reviews the history of these adjunctive procedures; salient clinical, preoperative diagnostic considerations; and key surgical pearls and addresses potential pitfalls and risks involved in these procedures.
