Re-orienting Mental Health Services to Mental Health Promotion

Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the context and rationale for mental health promotion within mental health services. The case for the inclusion of mental health promotion within mental services is considered in the context of addressing the heavy burden of mental disorders, integration within the Sustainable Development Goals, the social exclusion experienced by people with a mental disorder, the impact of mental disorders on physical health and the fact that mental health promotion measures have an effective role to play in improving the social functioning and quality of life of people with mental disorders. The key features of re-orienting mental health services to mental health promotion are described including initiatives to enhance recovery of people with mental disorder through empowerment, service user and caregiver involvement in service delveopment and integrated care.
