Pediatric Rhinosinusitis

Abstract

Balloon catheter dilation (BCD) is an important addition to the surgical treatment of pediatric chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Multiple studies have found it to be a safe technique; however, studies on efficacy have been limited by lack of control groups or standardization of adjuvant procedures. We review the available literature for the use of the technology in pediatric CRS as well as for expanded indications such as acute complications of sinusitis or critically ill patients. We also discuss pearls and pitfalls of the technique. Further studies are necessary to determine the long-term efficacy of BCD with and without adjuvant procedures, to examine BCD in expanded indications, and to analyze the comprehensive cost of the procedure.
