Abstract

First and foremost, fatigue is a symptom, not a syndrome. Treatment is multidimensional and multifactorial. Improvement takes time and patience by both the patient and clinician. As a diagnosis of exclusion once physiologic, psychologic, and biochemical causes have been eliminated, the remaining causes (idiopathic) are usually one of lifestyle behaviors. Although there are many more lifestyle behaviors, focused on in this chapter are sleep, nutrition, movement, and mental and emotional health. However, behavior change is difficult. People are more motivated to change when we tap into their emotions. The most important thing I hope for providers to gain from this chapter is the importance of listening to your patients and their stories. This in and of itself has the power to heal.
