Abstract

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) was originally separated from atypical carcinoids based on a worse prognosis. It is characterized by neuroendocrine morphology and expression of neuroendocrine markers. The cells are larger compared to SCLC and possess enlarged nucleoli and a coarse chromatin. Together with SCLC it forms the complex of high-grade neuroendocrine carcinomas of the lung. As SCLC LCNEC can occur in other organs, but is much more common in the lung.
