Abstract
-
Primary tumors of the pleura are less frequent compared to metastasis. They represent a relatively rare group of neoplasms with different pathways of differentiation.
-
The most common primary tumor of the pleura is diffuse malignant pleural mesothelioma, which is an aggressive malignant neoplasms originating from the mesothelial cells. They are observed more frequently in men and are typically associated with occupational or para-occupational exposure to asbestos. The diagnostic criteria of malignant mesothelioma are well defined by international guidelines.
-
More uncommon tumors, both benign and malignant, include well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma, solitary fibrous tumor (SFT), adenomatoid tumor, calcifying fibrous tumor, desmoid-type fibromatosis, desmoplastic round cell tumor, synovial sarcoma, epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, and angiosarcoma.
