Abstract
This chapter offers a background to pediatrics and describes features of the discipline, essential qualities of pediatricians, and a description of the pediatrician’s role. The chapter will address the pediatrician’s roles in the interaction with the child and various interactions with the parents, who are often the decision makers about medical care of their child. The topic of patient and family-centered care will be addressed in more detail later in the chapter. Other topics considered in this chapter include developing an understanding of how parents might see us, and describing and commenting on similarities and differences in how pediatricians treat mothers, fathers and other guardians. The chapter’s key points illustrate the broad nature of pediatrics and the wide variation in activities involved.
