Abstract
The “Literature Review on Career Research” chapter discusses the evolvement of careers over recent decades. Whilst early models of career development suggested a linear movement of individuals through predictable career stages and typically doing so within one organisation, it has been argued in recent career scholar debates that these traditional conceptualisations of careers are no longer valid. The trend shows rather multidirectional career systems, meaning upward, lateral and downward moves, although it has been criticized that these trends lack empirical evidence. The chapter outlines what different career stages exist and what influence age and gender have on career success. Moreover, the concept of career competencies is introduced and put into context. Concluding, the aspect of continuous learning as a meta-competency is discussed.
