Abstract

Blast-related concussion is a serious problem faced by providers in both the military and civilian setting. Blast may cause injury to the central nervous system by several mechanisms including the primary blast wave, secondary penetrating or blunt trauma, tertiary effects of being projected by the blast creating blunt or crushing trauma, quaternary effects from toxins or energy produced as the result of the explosion, and psychological sequelae from the experience of the traumatic event. While the mechanism is significantly different, the outcomes and treatment of blast-related concussion are similar to that of other mechanisms of concussion.
