Abstract

Astronomical observations can be accurately encapsulated by Newton’s universal law of gravitation. To obtain this law, we use a particular way of referencing events in space and time: Cartesian coordinates on three orthogonal axes, either fixed or moving at constant speed in a straight line relative to the general stellar background, while time is measured by the Earth’s rotation relative to that background.
