Abstract
Today, consumers of healthcare services—those that pay for and those that utilize the healthcare system—are demanding that healthcare take a more patient-centered approach. Public and private organizations have taken steps to advocate for change. Business and financial issues are intrinsically linked. How much and by what method providers are paid for their services is now linked to performance improvement initiatives and measuring outcomes. The changes in healthcare delivery create great opportunities for CBT providers, especially those who are interested in working in medical settings. Along with great opportunities for CBT come great challenges to adapt evidenced-based CBT techniques to settings and naturalistic patient populations where they were not developed. An additional challenge discussed in this chapter is how to use continuous performance methods to demonstrate the value and utility of CBT in medical settings. The chapter ends with a brief discussion about what all the changes, opportunities, and challenges mean for individual CBT therapists who are trying to make career decisions in the wake of unprecedented healthcare turmoil.
