Abstract
The challenges facing the most senior police leaders have changed considerably over the previous decade and this chapter reflects upon these changes from the perspective of a Chief Constable. A rapidly changing environment requires different leaders who bring different skills into policing. Reviewing upon the work of a select number of prominent and influential commentators writing on the future direction of leadership at the top of the police service in England and Wales, the chapter argues structural change is necessary if police leadership is to adapt and deliver a service that is fit for purpose.
