Abstract
In this chapter, Hogg identifies the reasons why a gap appeared in the pop-musical market at this time. It goes on to examine why this gap was filled by a British band, and why that British band was the Beatles. He considers what sets A Hard Day’s Night apart from previous pop-musicals, and the ways in which the innovative nature of this film extended to the techniques used to present popular music. Close textual analysis of key sequences from the film are used to demonstrate how these resulted in an expansion of popular music functions.
