Abstract
In this chapter, you will learn the basics of MATLAB® using the command line. The notation for basic mathematical operators is introduced and the role of different types of parentheses summarized. MATLAB records your command history, and we will show you how to access this so that you can repeat commands without having to retype them and how to add comments to your code. You will discover how floating-point numbers can lead to rounding errors in computational calculations. You will learn how to assign calculated values to variables, the rules for naming variables, how to use those variables in further calculations and how to erase them when they are no longer needed.

Notes
- 1.
From now on we will not always say “Try the following in the Command Window” instead assume, unless otherwise stated, that you should try any bits of code in MATLAB® as you work through the book.
- 2.
If you are using macOS or Linux, you may need to use forward slash rather than back slash in filepath names.
