Abstract

This chapter contains a review of prenatal care, maternal conditions that affect the fetus, delivery room management of the newborn infant, and routine care of the infant in the newborn nursery. Also discussed are the newborn examination and some of the neonatal conditions encountered by pediatricians. Although many of the diseases that are discussed here can be effectively identified, diagnosed, and managed by primary care physicians, certain conditions require prompt identification and timely referral for higher level neonatal care. Additional pearls are included at the end of this chapter.
